In the past, slats and especially roof slats were mostly manufactured with insufficient quality and too small a cross-section. Crash accidents were thus inevitable.
In order to make the workplace safe again, the Association of German Saw and Timber Industry e. V. (VDS) and various trade associations DIN 4074. This specifies corresponding regulations for trade and industry.

In order for a “pile” of wood to become an assortment of battens, it is important to first sort them in bundles ready for dispatch with the color code.
A whole range of properties are tested for the sorting classes of these squared timbers. For example, slats with grading class S 13 contain smaller knots than squared timber with grading class S 10. However, if the grading is carried out mechanically, aesthetically undesirable knots may well be contained.

The strength classifications prescribed by the building authorities can under no circumstances be replaced by aesthetic criteria.

Technical regulations
The following technical regulations apply to S10 battens:
- DIN 4074-1: 2003-06, describes the grading of softwood according to load-bearing capacity, softwood sawn timber
- VOB ATV DIN 18334 : 2012-09, is for carpentry and woodwork
- DIN 68800-2 , regulations for chemical wood protection
